BNP Paribas targets $853M from Google Cloud deal
French banking giant BNP Paribas SA is projecting $853 million in value creation through its new partnership with Google Cloud. The bank will leverage Google’s cloud computing division and Gemini Enterprise’s library of 200+ open-source AI models to streamline operations and drive returns.
AI as a Profit Driver
BNP Paribas views AI as a profit and loss driver, according to Charles Holive, managing director and chief AI officer for the bank’s corporate and institutional banking business. “Every program we decide on, especially the big transformation ones, is tied to specific financial targets,” Holive said. These targets include revenue generation, cost savings, and risk avoidance.
The five-year deal with Google Cloud will enable BNP Paribas to develop purpose-built AI agents using Gemini’s models. Georgina Bulkeley, managing director and global industry lead of financial services at Google, emphasized the importance of a group-wide AI enablement program to support this technology pairing. She noted that this program covers everything from foundational AI literacy right through to specialized agent development, representing a critical cultural aspect of the partnership.

Early Deployments and Workforce Changes
Initial deployments will focus on BNP Paribas’s corporate and institutional banking (CIB) business, with 65,000 employees gaining AI access. The bank aims to improve middle- and back-office processes, such as credit memo generation and know-your-client procedures.
The partnership may lead to workforce changes, according to Marc Camus, group chief information officer. Camus noted that the bank plans to invest in AI and data experts and implement change management to help teams adapt to working with AI agents. He stated that the agreement may lead to some change in headcount, but this has been an ongoing result from implementing process automation for many years.
A Broader AI Strategy
BNP Paribas’s deal with Google Cloud is part of a broader AI strategy that includes a three-year extension with Mistral AI to develop generative AI offerings. The announcement comes four months after BNP Paribas inked this extension to a 2024 groupwide agreement with Mistral AI, focusing on designs based on the vendor’s large language models that meet the bank’s operational and regulatory requirements. Camus explained that the bank does not rely on a single partner, instead choosing solutions based on specific use cases and business requirements. He said the bank will use both on-premises and public cloud solutions as it continues to invest in AI and process automation.
