Tangerine Business positions itself as a mobile-first suite for Canadian entrepreneurs.

Engine by Starling is powering Scotiabank’s Tangerine Business, delivering a cloud-native banking solution to the Canadian market. The platform enables the digital subsidiary to launch its first small and medium enterprise (SME) proposition in under 12 months, marking Engine’s first deployment in North America.

Tangerine Business features

Tangerine Business positions itself as a mobile-first suite for Canadian entrepreneurs. The product launched in phases via a Founders Circle and a public waitlist. Initial offerings include a spending account for daily transactions, a savings account to build reserves, and a FlexiDraft facility for cash flow management. The platform also includes Spaces, a tool that lets users organise funds into separate buckets for spending, saving, and budgeting.

Terri-Lee Weeks, the President and CEO of Tangerine, described the initiative as a milestone in the bank’s transformation journey. She stated that the launch of Tangerine Business represents a commitment to reimagining banking for Canadian businesses.

Scotiabank and Engine partnership

This partnership validates the Engine model, which pairs a modular, API-first technology stack with a repeatable implementation programme designed to help banks replace legacy systems and launch new products quickly.

Engine by Starling, founded in 2022 from Starling Bank, sells the same core that runs the UK lender as a Software-as-a-Service platform. The company has now deployed its technology in three international markets. Sam Everington, CEO of Engine by Starling, highlighted the speed of the rollout, noting that the launch in Canada followed earlier deployments for Salt Bank in Romania and AMP Bank GO in Australia.

Sam Everington, CEO of Engine by Starling, notes that the partnership with Tangerine is part of one of Canada’s Big 5 banks and serves more than two million clients, so delivering for a bank of that calibre gives us real confidence in Engine’s long-term potential. In November 2025, Tangerine signed a 10-year agreement to migrate more than two million clients onto Engine, demonstrating the platform’s capability to handle the scale of a major financial institution.
