IB Talk Highlights Global Education Challenges

Managing general agents (MGAs) are reshaping the insurance environment by emphasizing speed, specialization and technology, a shift highlighted in a recent interview on the IB Talk podcast.

Program market gains momentum as brokers adapt

The discussion, led by Brian Cohen, president of the Texas & Midwest Program Agency Association (TMPAA), focused on the current state of the program market. He noted that program structures, once a niche, now account for a growing share of premiums as carriers seek agile ways to reach specific segments.

He explained that MGAs can launch tailored products faster than traditional carriers because they operate with less bureaucracy. “We’re able to move from concept to issuance in weeks, not months,” Cohen said, highlighting the competitive advantage of rapid rollout.

For brokers, this means new avenues to place business that align with niche client needs. Emerging opportunities appear in sectors such as renewable energy, cyber risk and specialty construction, where program‑based solutions can fill coverage gaps that legacy policies often overlook. The conversation also referenced the hidden risks in green energy, noting that insurance gaps in solar, batteries, and related technologies are prompting MGAs to craft bespoke coverages that address end‑of‑life liabilities.

Adaptability, not scale, drives future leaders

When asked what will define the next generation of industry leaders, he stressed adaptability over sheer size. “The ability to pivot quickly, integrate new data sources and respond to regulatory shifts will separate the winners from the rest,” he asserted.

Technology plays a central role. MGAs are adopting advanced analytics to price risk more accurately and using digital platforms to streamline underwriting. This approach not only reduces turnaround times but also improves the customer experience, a factor increasingly important to both insurers and insureds. The interview highlighted how digital integration is also unlocking the potential of parametric solutions, especially in managing natural catastrophe exposure.

In the broader context, the interview touched on the growing importance of program partnerships. Brokers who can manage these relationships and advise clients on the best fit stand to gain market share. Insights from related segments, such as the championing of women in construction risk and the evolving construction insurance strategies from experts at Burns & Wilcox, illustrate how specialized programs are becoming essential tools for addressing traditionally underserved markets.

Compliance remains essential.

Looking ahead, the industry faces a balancing act between innovation and risk management. While speed and specialization open doors, they also demand robust oversight to prevent underwriting lapses. Maintaining compliance while adopting new technology will be a key challenge for MGAs and their partners. The conversation also referenced broader trends, such as the accelerating innovation in renewables and the need for insurers to keep pace with the evolving risk setting, showing that the future of program insurance will be defined by the ability to blend agility with disciplined governance.
