Security Breach Incident of MyFitnessPal
Data of more than 150 million users of a well-known fitness and dietary app called “MyFitnessPal” had been hacked on March 29, 2918. The data that was stolen included the users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords. This company then immediately notified their users through emails and in-app messaging after they had noticed than there was unauthorized access to the data on February. The company urged their users to take immediate actions and change their passwords. Unfortunately, the identity and whereabouts of the people/s who had orchestrated the breach which stole the data of millions of people is still unknown.
Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. The damage caused by this incident is considered moderate since the company does not collect any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Currently, the company is working on figuring out how the hackers had the ability to get into their system without being noticed.
And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen may seem like it doesn’t matter, the information can still have bigger power than what the users may think. For instance, the app has the ability to know the precise performance and location data of its users. This means that if someone else has the ability to access a user’s account, then they also possess the ability to track the user’s whereabouts and know how fast the user is going. Whoever holds the user’s data may then be able to track them down, putting the users in potential danger.
Getting Your Data Secured
This situation is a very important reminder for everyone that in this modern age of technology, any personal data can be easily hacked into. Thus, listed below are the things that a person can do in order to secure their private data.
1. Using Complex Passwords
While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though making your password more complex may seem too easy, this may give the hackers a hard time in cracking your password and therefore giving more time for the app’s company to fix the issue and have your important data secured.
2. Reading Through the App’s Terms and Services.
While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is of great importance that the users are aware of what the app can do.
While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
